01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Part of the pleasure is taking your time over the daily fish and deciding what to order. At Suehiro, an izakaya in Kyodo, one diner described choosing that day’s sashimi for a platter, making the catch of the day the focus of the meal. One platter featured striped beakfish, flathead, scallop and ark clam; on another occasion, a diner enjoyed Japanese butterfish and greater amberjack sashimi. There is a wide variety of fish, served as sashimi as well as grilled or simmered dishes, so you can choose according to your preferences and the day’s offerings.

A diner who tried thinly sliced simmered flounder praised the tender texture and savoury flavour. It is a dish to linger over when you want to appreciate the fish, while the vinegared mackerel was also described as delicately seasoned, moist and rich with fat. Bite-sized pork fillet cutlets are another well-regarded order. Served on skewers, they are easy to share and offer a fried option between seafood dishes.

There is a choice of sake, including regional varieties, as well as shochu, to enjoy at an unhurried pace with sashimi and small plates. The restaurant suits both solo diners and groups, and stays open until 2:00 the following day. One visitor noted that seating is limited, so consider booking if you are planning dinner.
